News sports Web page hopes to be catch all

When Terry Ouellette and Chad Bautz say they want it all, they really mean it. All your sports information, that is.

The two are collaborating on a new Web page, saskatoonsports.com. Ouellette is the designer and owner, Bautz is the sales manager. Sports is the game.

"It's a one-stop information site. We're an on-line presence for the sports community in Saskatoon," Bautz reports, adding that this means any and all sports. Web surfers can visit the page and find out virtually anything they want to know.

"We want all sporting groups to first provide us with the information," Ouellette adds, noting this can include registration information, summaries, game schedules and player profiles. He also points out that there are no charges for posting or retrieving information from saskatoonsports.com.

Browsers can also find a host of links as well as the latest scores at the site, which was launched last spring. "We're trying to be as current as possible," Ouellette notes. "The standings may not be up to date but we'll try to have scores the day or night of the game.

"After being involved in the sporting scene for 30 some years, I wanted to come up with a way on elaborating on sports in Saskatoon," Ouellette explains of his inspiration for saskatoonsports.com. "I want to help answer the question, 'how do I find out about this?'"

Although the two feel Saskatoon media outlets do an excellent job of local coverage, the Web page can be much more in-depth, Bautz says. The two don't see themselves as competing with so much as complementing current coverage.

Ouellette has been working as a Web designer for nearly two years. His company, 5 Corners Design Group, counts SaskPlace, the Saskatchewan Hawks, the Canada Remembers Air Show and the Saskatoon Touch Football League as clients. He's also the creator of whattodoinsaskatoon.com, an event listing site for the city.

"I was off work for a while and wondering what I could do to keep my mind sharp," he says of how he started Web designing. "I started fooling around with computers and taught myself a few things."

While the duo works together elsewhere, they currently see the Web page as a needed service that brings in a few dollars. They also like the flexibility of an on-line business. "I can work on it as much or as little as I want," Ouellette says. "Some weeks I'll put 60 to 70 hours into it, other weeks just 20."
